The first ever Wessex Data Access Scheme attracted strong engagement across the region, with a range of innovative research projects selected to progress
Run jointly by the Wessex Secure Data Environment (Wessex SDE) and Wessex Health Partners (WHP), the scheme supports pioneering research projects while strengthening the health data available to researchers across the region.
Nine applications were selected, with a further three given conditional awards. These projects will now move onto next stages, subject to approval by the Wessex Data Access Committee (DAC). This will ensure each project demonstrates public benefit and meets the highest standards of governance, security and responsible data use.

The Data Access Scheme (DAS) provides in-kind technical and data-enablement support, including access to the Wessex SDE platform and specialist expertise in data curation, research management, secure data upload and user onboarding.
Applications were assessed against published criteria including public benefit, alignment with Wessex SDE priorities, scientific merit and innovation, feasibility and deliverability and the potential to strengthen regional data assets for future research.
Mark Heffernan, Managing Director of the Wessex SDE, said: “These awards are a practical step towards building a truly Wessex-wide data research facility. The selected projects will help us maximise the value of existing SDE assets, support new data flows where appropriate and create evidence that can improve care.”
Christine McGrath, Managing Director of Wessex Health Partners, said: “The response to this new scheme highlights the strength of collaboration across our partnership. By bringing together expertise from NHS organisations and universities across Wessex, we are creating new opportunities to use health data to answer important research questions and deliver benefits for patients and communities.”
The scheme may run again. Please ensure you are signed up to the WHP Newsletter to be among the first to hear.
