Why I’m excited about putting Wessex health data to work

Mark Heffernan, Managing Director of the Wessex SDE, explains how the new Wessex Data Access Scheme can help turn NHS data into better research, stronger partnerships and improved care.

One of the questions I’m often asked about the Wessex Secure Data Environment is a simple one: what difference will it actually make?

It’s a fair question. NHS data is talked about a lot. Secure Data Environments are talked about a lot. But the real test is whether this infrastructure helps good ideas move faster, supports better research, and ultimately improves care.

That’s why I’m so pleased that Wessex Health Partners and the Wessex SDE have launched the new Wessex Data Access Scheme. Applications are open until 10 July 2026, and I’d encourage researchers with strong ideas to take a look. You can find out more here

For me, this scheme goes right to the heart of what the SDE is here to do. Every day, NHS organisations collect data through the delivery of care. The challenge is turning that data into something researchers can use to answer important questions and improve lives.

That’s what the Wessex SDE has been building: research-ready datasets that can be used securely, transparently, and for public benefit.

The Data Access Scheme helps this work go further. For researchers, it creates a practical route to test an idea, explore a question and access data without some of the barriers that can stop good research before it starts. For the wider Wessex system, it’s about value. A dataset prepared for one study should help unlock many more.

And it is the public benefit story I think we need to keep telling. This is the SDE turning data into discovery. Not in an abstract way, but through research that helps find new treatments, improve diagnosis, reduce waiting times, and make NHS services work better for patients.

The scheme is particularly interested in areas where Wessex already has strength, including cancer, rare diseases, and genomics; dementia and long-term conditions; and urgent and emergency care. But the bigger invitation is simpler: if you have a research question that could improve health and care, we want to hear from you.

We've already seen strong interest from across the region. Researchers are keen to use the data we already hold, bring in new datasets, and explore what else might be possible. Our Q&A webinar gives a flavour of that conversation, and the opportunities people can see:

We're still looking for great submissions. While not every project can be supported in this round, every application is the start of a conversation to help us better understand the questions researchers want to answer and where – by working together – the SDE can create the greatest impact in future.

I also want to recognise our NHS partners whose work makes all this possible. The SDE only works because organisations across Wessex are willing to do the careful, often unseen work of preparing data, assuring access, and building trust. The stronger those partnerships become, the more valuable the SDE becomes for the whole region.

Ultimately, the Wessex Data Access Scheme is about making the work already done work harder: turning existing data, investment and expertise into a lasting research capability that delivers better evidence, better partnerships, and better outcomes for patients.
