NIHR Wessex Experimental Medicine Network (WEMN)

NIHR WEMN was established by the Southampton NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC). The purpose of WEMN is to extend the word-class work of the BRC to researchers and patients in our region.

NIHR WEMN was established by the Southampton NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC). The purpose of WEMN is to extend the word-class work of the BRC to researchers and patients in our region.

We focus on the BRC's current research themes and evolving areas of experimental medicine expertise:

  • Nutrition, Lifestyle and Metabolism
  • Respiratory and Allergy
  • Data, Health and Society
  • Microbiology, Immunology and Infection
  • Perioperative and Critical Care

Partnership working is critical to our success and the network is hosted by the NIHR Southampton BRC and supported by Wessex Health Partners. By working together, we support experimental medicine activity across all the regional partners. This increases access to innovative treatments for patients in the Dorset and Hampshire and Isle of Wight area.

We have run a joint Small Grants Scheme with Wessex Health Partners over the past two years. The WEMN grants support new collaborations working in the experimental medicine area. One of the main aims of the small grants is also to attract further external funding into the region.

We are keen to open up access to help with the development of skills and careers across the region. We offer shared learning through our on-line weekly BRC Science Forum. We also support networking events including workshops, and conferences, and funding to support education, training and development of research staff.
